Magento 2: The Questions You Should Be Asking
Back in November 2015 Magento 2 was launched, the long-awaited successor of its hugely successful eCommerce platform, notably a lot of excitement followed. However, one year on and as the dust has settled, the community and forums still seem relatively quiet, apart from the early adopters of course.
Here at Nimbus we’ve answered the following questions every Magento site holder should be asking themselves.
Question 1: How smooth is the move?
If you’re looking for a smooth transfer, you’re not going to get one! It’s worth bearing in mind that there is no direct upgrade path from Magento 1.9 to Magento 2. As a result, themes and code customisation will not be transferable, meaning you’ll have to start from scratch.
Great, but it’s not all bad news! It can actually allow you to spend some much needed to time to re-think and redo your site, ideally in a more efficient way. Time to get rid of those 50+ extensions!
Question 2: When is the right time to change?
It’s a matter of when not if. Technical support for version 1.9 will be active until 2021, three years after its termination. After this period, it’s worth noting that no patches for this version will be issued. For an open source system, security is paramount so it’s important to have the latest security updates to avoid any malicious comprises to your website.
Even if you’re not ready to migrate to Magento 2 yet, your eCommerce consultant or web agency can advise you on a longer term plan to ensure your eCommerce platform is suitable for your business’ requirements.
Question 3: Can I upgrade to Magento 2 myself?
Yes you can, but should you? Probably not! Unless you are of course an experienced Magento developer. Unlike Magento 1.9 where you can make site changes via the admin panel, version 2.0 only allows you to use the command line which requires much deeper technical knowledge.
Ultimately the decisions is yours. You’ll need to weigh out the pain points your business is currently experiencing with Magento 1.9 and assess your long term plan for developing a successful eCommerce platform.
