Why do I need a firewall?

What is a firewall?

A firewall is software or hardware that checks information coming from the Internet or a network, and then either blocks it or allows it to pass through to your computer/server, depending on your firewall settings.

Why do I need one?

To protect your server. All servers hosted by Nimbus hosting are on a publicly available network so there is nothing to stop anybody ‘attempting’ to access your server. Of course, if you use complex passwords, gaining access to the server will not be easy for somebody who doesn’t know the password. But what if somebody guesses the password? If somebody guessed your SSH, control panel, database or remote desktop password they could cause some serious damage to your server or even use your server to send out malicious traffic of their own. You can set up a firewall so that only approved computers can access these services, adding a very strong layer of protection to your server.

What are your options?

All servers provided by Nimbus Hosting come with an operating system firewall which can be tailored to your needs. This isn’t a dedicated firewall solution as it is built in, there are better options available. Dedicated hardware firewalls can be added to the network in front of your server for an extra layer of protection for an additional fee, feel free to give us a call on 0208 0909 664 to discuss the options.
