The invention of the internet has had a monumental impact on mankind and the way in which we go about our life, although the internet may not have been possible without the other significant inventions that came before it, it’s difficult to find anything that can compare.In celebration of World Internet Day, we’ve taken a quick trip down memory lane of the most significant moments that have shaped how we navigate the online world through this timeline created by Red-Fern.

Other huge milestones that have shaped the internet we know today;

1997 – Google.com was registered as a domain on September 15th. The name—a play on the word “googol,” a mathematical term for the number represented by the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros—reflects Larry and Sergey’s mission to organise a seemingly infinite amount of information on the web.

2007 – Apple introduced the iPhone and in doing so changed the way we use the internet and access information forever.

2011 – Nimbus Hosting was created.

2012 – By October, 1 billion people now have a Facebook profile

2015 – On 24th August, 1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family. 1 in 7!

2016 – In June 2016, Access to the Internet became a human right. According to the United Nations Human Rights Council, which passed a non-binding resolution in June that condemns countries that intentionally take away or disrupt its citizens’ internet access.

2016 – There are now over 10,000 domain names being registered everyday!

Where next?

New technology seems to be seeking to blur the boundaries between the internet and everyday life such as Google Glass and the Apple Watch. Google Executive Chairman, Eric Schmidt, believes that everyone on earth could be online by 2020. No matter how it transforms, and transforms us it’s clear that the internet has transformed the world and it’s only just getting started.
